OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) aims to promote and support a global effort to enable people to
protect their own health as it relates to sexuality and reproduction, and to have access to health services and receive care in
matters related to sexual and reproductive health, when needed. To achieve this, the Department advocates and promotes sound
public health strategies, sets norms and standards, engages in technical cooperation activities, and supports relevant research.
RHR's overall strategic framework is provided by the WHO Global Reproductive Health Strategy approved by the 57th World Health Assembly in 2004. More information about RHR can be found at http://www.who.int/reproductive-health.

Description of duties:
Director RHR/HRP plays a leadership and reference role among United Nations agencies and partners in advancing sexual and reproductive health within the international development agenda. The Director will develop and implement innovative approaches in sexual and reproductive health through the coordination and promotion of relevant research, the development of evidencebased best practices and the provision of technical support to countries wishing to strengthen their policies and programmes and the quality and reach of their services in sexual and reproductive health. A critical aspect of this is to support implementation research to close the gap between science and service, and to strengthen the gender and human rights dimensions of policies and programmes. This is carried out by providing vision and an innovative strategic, scientific and operational direction to WHO's RHR Department as well as to the cosponsored HRP Programme.
In carrying out these functions, the Director will: (i) develop and implement strategies, priorities, policies and operational plans for both RHR and HRP; (ii) lead priority-setting in research by anticipating gaps in critical issues where evidence is lacking; (iii) promote and facilitate the application of research findings into sexual and reproductive health policies and programmes; (iv) promote concerted action and ensure coordination with HRP cosponsors, UN agencies and other organizations active in sexual and reproductive health and (v) advise Member States, other parts of WHO, other UN agencies and other inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations on matters relating to sexual and reproductive health.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Advanced degree in a health related field, with a post-graduate qualification in a discipline related to sexual and reproductive health, preferably at the PhD level.
Desirable: Postgraduate degree in public health.
WHO only considers higher educational qualifications obtained from an accredited institution.
Skills:
Broad knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and its public health aspects, including the gender and human rights dimension, demonstrated research and research management talent and ability. Proven vision, political acumen and dynamic leadership skills, strong communication skills, diplomatic skills, fundraising skills as evidenced by a strong track record.

Experience:
Essential: At least 10 years of experience in research and research management, including experience at the international level. At least 5 years of experience of sexual and reproductive health programmes and their public health aspects in the field, including experience in developing countries. Proven excellent leadership experience.
Desirable: Management experience. Experience in working with a UN agency.
Languages:
Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of another WHO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian).

WHO's salaries are calculated in US dollars. They consist of a base salary and a post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and exchange rates. Other benefits include: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance.

Post Adjustment: 90.4 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
