Organizational Setting and Reporting
These positions are located in the regional offices of Kidal and Tessalit of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. The Engineering Technician will report to the Chief Engineer.
Responsibilities
  • Exercise overall supervision over the efficient operation of the Mission's buildings, facilities and services, including, but not limited to, generators, sanitation, drainage, water supply, electricity supply, air conditioning, waste disposal, and security facilities.
  • Apply commonly used engineering practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the construction or repair of buildings, roads, bridges, field defenses, and other related structures and facilities in the field.
  • Involved in conducting preliminary site assessments to obtain information such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
  • Involved in developing technical data regarding materials, size dimensions, quantities and costs to be incorporated into formal specifications.
  • Evaluate engineering work-requests and assign individuals or work-teams to carry out building maintenance and repair tasks, as required.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement repair/maintenance works for the Mission's buildings,
  • facilities and services.
  • Be fully involved in the planning, design, and supervision of new construction projects, including developing statement of works, bills of quantities and drawings as part of a team.
  • Carry out scheduled and preventive maintenance of all structures in the Mission.
  • Be responsible for the provision and installation of necessary utilities.
  • Periodically inspect ongoing projects.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Technical or vocational certificate/diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, construction, project management or in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Recognised and valid License in one of the trades (carpentry, plumbing, welding, or similar) is an asset.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in construction of facilities, engineering, or related field.
  • The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five years for candidates who possess a first level University degree.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the positions advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable
