Appointment against this position is limited to the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT). Duration of initial appointment is contingent upon availability of funds. Further extensions are also contingent upon availability of funds and the mandate of UNAKRT.
Organizational Setting and Reporting
Under the applicable law, and in accordance with the terms of the Agreement between the United Nations and the Royal Government of Cambodia, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has jurisdiction to try senior leaders and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal
law, international humanitarian law and custom, and international conventions recognized by Cambodia, during the period of the Khmer Rouge regime from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979.
While the ECCC is established as a national court, the Royal Government of Cambodia sought the technical assistance of the United Nations in operating the court. In Resolution A/57/228 and A/57/228B, the General Assembly approved the involvement of the United Nations and endorsed the agreement outlining the arrangements between the two parties. The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) was established in 2005 to provide on-going technical, operational and logistical support to the Royal Government of Cambodia in all aspect of the Court's operations.

Responsibilities
The Legal Officer (Judicial Support Services) reports to the Deputy Director of the Office of Administration/Coordinator, UNAKRT and works in close coordination with the Chief of the Court Management Section (CMS).
- Coordinates with and/or assists the Chief, CMS, to ensure efficient judicial support services to the judicial offices that include the Office of the Co-prosecutors, the Office of the Co-Investigating Judges, the Chambers and the Defense Support. In cooperation with the Chief CMS, she/he acts as the focal point on all judicial support services including transcription, AV recordings, and trial management related issues.
- Attends the hearings before the ECCC and provides assistance prior to and during the hearings in cooperation with the Court Officers; he/she provides secretariat support to ECCC judicial committees (Plenary, Rules and Procedures Committee and Judicial Administration Committee); assists in the formulation of internal policies and directives for the Court Management Section; is responsible for content management of the UNAKRT and ECCC website so far as judicial postings are concerned.
- Provides legal advice to the Deputy Director on issues relating to the implementation of the Agreement between the UN and the RGC, the supplementary agreement on security, the supplementary agreement on utilities, and legal advice on operational/administrative issues as and when required; assists in drafting periodic reports from the Office of the Deputy Director to the UN headquarters, the UNAKRT Steering Committee and the annual report of the SG to the General Assembly; acts as the spokesperson for the chambers and offices of the ECCC as and when required; assists the victims support and the public affairs sections, as required; any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.Professionalism: In-depth knowledge of criminal procedures and experience in court management; analytical skills, discretion and sound judgment in problem-solving; demonstrated planning and organizational skills; ability to draft legal and policy papers and work under pressure; conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; show persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remain calm in stressful situations; Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence;. Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law is required. A first level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Minimum of 5 (five) years of progressively responsible and relevant experience. Professional experience in an international/ad hoc tribunal is desirable.
