Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Web Services Section of the News and Content Branch, News and Media Division (NMD), Department of Public Information. The Incumbent reports to the Chief of Website Chinese Language Unit.
The Web Services Section (WSS) oversees the design, development and presentation of the top layers of the UN website in all six official languages, including the homepage, the five thematic portals (Peace and Security, Development, Human Rights, Humanitarian Affairs, and International Law), as well as comprehensive background information about the UN such as global issues, and events, including international observances. The Section also provides guidance and assistance to Secretariat offices in creating and enhancing their websites in all official languages. WSS promotes best practices for web development and other Internet-related activities, including multilingualism, usability and accessibility for the disabled. WSS also maintains social media accounts for the United Nations in five official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish).
Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Chief of Website Chinese Language Unit and general guidance from the Chief of Web Services Section, the incumbent is responsible for:
- Coordinate and undertake the development spec and templates as well as the daily maintenance of the official United Nations website (www.un.org); Prioritize needs and monitor web content regularly;
- Oversee translation, editing, proofreading and posting of content published on the websites maintained by the Website Language Unit;
- Produce and populate web content, including the development of new websites using CMS such as Drupal and Wordpress, and maintenance of the existing websites using HTML, Dreamweaver and CMS;
- Prepare new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages; conceptualize and create dynamic web pages; draft, edit, design and update web pages as needed and provide specialized editorial, design and programming assistance in the oversight and maintenance of the materials posted in one or more of the UN official language required; Ensure that web content complies with the Organization requirements.
- Supervise, coordinate and administer the work of technical consultants hired by the Language Units;
- Provide guidance to, and may supervise, the work of website assistants and interns;
- Prepare and post content for social media on Weibo, WeChat, YouKu, Tudou, Tencent video, Sina Video, Weishi Meipai and Miaopai; monitor, analyze and report on impact achieved via social media usage.
- Act as focal point on technical issues, provide support and assistance to clients within the Organization; make presentations about the UN website to both UN and non-UN audiences; attend conferences, workshops and conduct web-related training as required;
- Prepare usage statistics and other reports as well as analyse traffic to site and other related mediums; conduct ad hoc surveys, and keep abreast of current developments in IT technology and undertake investigations of new initiatives where appropriate.; participate in meetings and brainstorming sessions on website policy and guidelines;
- Perform any other task assigned by the Chief of Section or Chief of Unit as necessary;
- Implement promotions and email campaigns and develop marketing campaign;
- Develop and manage relationships with media partners to raise profile of the site in conjunction with the other web officers in other languages.
PROFESSIONALISM: Excellent knowledge of the Chinese language, proven ability to translate, edit, proofread and create content in Chinese ; strong knowledge of information and web technologies; ability to produce compelling (visually and linguistically appealing) web compatible images and infographics, knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in scripting languages; ability to serve as IT focal point of the Chinese Language Unit (CLU); ability to independently manage IT projects handled by the CLU; ability to acquire new technical skills and share acquired knowledge with the members of the CLU; strong analytical skills in analysing issues and problems and ability to apply technical expertise to resolve issues; ability to effectively prepare specifications and other written reports/documentation in a clear, concise style; shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations; is committed to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.
