Background Information - Job-specific
The project focuses on provision of support to UNMISS in its efforts to meet its mandate in terms of protection of civilians in South Sudan. A critical part of such efforts revolve around ongoing operations to provide suitable protection to civilians in the Protection Of Civilians (POC) area in Bentiu, which continues to experience an ongoing influx of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) due to insecurity caused by conflict in the north of South Sudan. The population of the Bentiu POC has increased dramatically during 2015, and the influx of IDPs continues. As the POC population increases, so greater pressure is applied to UNMISS to ensure the continued protection of these IDPs. To ensure it can meet its mandate, UNMISS is in need of ever increasing amounts of logistical supplies to be delivered to Bentiu. To this end, the project is aimed at the rehabilitation and extension of the existing airstrip in Rubkona to accommodate C-130 landing. Use of C-130s will offer immediate costs savings, in comparison to continued use of rotary assets, while simultaneously facilitating the movement of greater quantities of much needed UNMISS supplies to Bentiu.
