Job Description
The Senior Banker Corporate Recovery is responsible for leading complex and / or contentious Corporate Recovery projects with the aim to maximise the Bank's recoveries through restructuring of balance sheet, assets sale or other value recovery actions, as appropriate. The type of projects may involve debt and / or equity investment across any of the sectors for both corporates and financial institutions in EBRD's countries of operations. In addition, the Senior Banker is required to lead Corporate Recovery's measures and events to provide 'lessons learned' feedback across the project cycle to relevant departments at EBRD.
Corporate Recovery manages the impaired assets transferred to the department with the aim to recover best possible value for EBRD. By applying sound market and banking principles, Corporate Recovery takes whatever action is deemed necessary by the Bank to protect its interests in light of its mandate. This may include restructurings, achieving an exit on the best available terms, or the enforcement of collateral and of any other of the Bank's rights, as well as litigation.
This role places Corporate Recovery frequently in a sensitive position vis-à-vis its external stakeholders and therefore also contributes to shape EBRD's perception in the respective markets. Corporate Recovery also gives independent strategic advice to Banking Teams concerning assets which have been transferred on an advisory basis or otherwise upon request. Furthermore, it plays an important role in providing constructive feedback across the project cycle through dissemination of 'lessons learned' to relevant internal stakeholders.
The Senior Banker takes responsibility for effective leadership of his/ her project teams, supervises junior banking staff, and provides adequate coaching and mentoring assistance
Responsibilities
- Developing, structuring and implementing of sustainable recovery strategies including realisation, foreclosure, restructuring and other measures necessary to maximise the returns to the Bank and to restore projects to acceptable risk ratings or ensure a timely exit.
- Seeking guidance from the Director, Corporate Recovery in determining optimal recovery strategies for the allocated project portfolio and assisting the Director as required in achieving the operational goals for the unit.
- Advising the Banking Department on strategies for the resolution of selected problem cases where it has retained primary responsibility for the relationship
- Co-ordinating with all relevant departments and residential offices within EBRD to ensure support for the implementation of the strategy developed for each project
- Co-ordinating and managing resources provided by legal firms, accountants, consultants, other advisors and EBRD internal teams
- Assuming the role as nominee board directors in investee companies on behalf of the Bank as appropriate
- Knowledge sharing and coaching of junior bankers within the unit and in HQ / Resident Offices in recovery techniques
- Leading and delivering of measures to provide a feedback-loop to internal stakeholders via distribution of 'lessons learned'
- Providing timely, accurate and comprehensive information on the status of the allocated project portfolio to ensure adequate reporting to Senior Management.
- Representing and promoting the Bank through developing key relationships with senior level counterparts, attend industry events, conferences, meetings with government authorities, investors, organisations, and business communities.
In addition to a demonstrable track record of relevant banking experience in a major financial institution where he / she will have acquired strong credit, analytical, corporate banking and deal execution experience, the Senior Banker should have at least 5-7 years of experience in restructuring / work-out situations and / or shareholder value creation in distressed equity.
The Senior Banker is also expected to have:
- a master degree from a leading university
- profound credit and financial analysis skills
- a skill to analyse complex situations and make clear judgements in changing operations and environments; in particular also under pressure
- outstanding negotiating skills
- high integrity; be creative and have a 'can-do' attitude
- coaching, mentoring & leadership skills
- computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spread sheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules
- excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of any other of language of the Bank's countries of operations is desirable.
The Senior Banker will be expected to travel regularly to the various countries of operations, often at short notice. While working in a challenging environment under time pressure and prone to conflicts with various stakeholders in a project, the Senior Banker has to remain confident and self-assured as well as must present the diplomatic abilities to gain acceptance, support and commitment to the Bank's point of view. Senior Banker must have the ability and willingness to lead in challenging situations.
