Background
The UN development agencies arrived to China in 1979 with the introduction of opening up reforms in 1979. Since then, the UN system in China has worked to support the Government of China in meeting its development challenges.
The UN system in China is comprised of 20+ agencies and entities working together to support China in her development. While each agency has programs and projects in line with their respective mandates, the UN Country Team, composed of representatives of all UN agencies in China, is committed to ensure that these programs are mutually reinforcing and in a well coordinated manner provided optimal assistance to China.
The Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) works under supervision of the RC and in close cooperation with all the UN agencies operating in the country to promote coherence and complementarity of the work and messages of the UN system in China.
The RCO is responsible to enhance the visibility of the UN system in China, advancing recognition of the UN's achievements, promoting cross-agency communication and collaboration, identifying and sharing best practices and areas for improvement and assisting in timely dissemination of information among UN Agencies, Government officials, media, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society. The RCO uses the official website of the UN system in China as an important tool for dissemination and outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities
UNDP, through the RCO, shall provide:
- Opportunity: This internship is a remarkable opportunity for students to acquire experience in a professional setting as interns in the UN system in China. Through this programme, interns will be exposed to UN's development activities, thematic priorities, and technical cooperation practices. Interns will become part of the UN Resident Coordinator's team and will be able to use their technical knowledge in a professional environment to create and manage the tool for the promotion of messages and visibility of the UN in China.
- Information: Upon arrival to the organization, the interns will receive an induction training by the staff at the Office of the Resident Coordinator the necessary information and training to be able to understand the professional context in which the will carry out their activities and the nature of the work, the UN system in China and its programmes.
- Equipment: The RCO will provide the working space, equipment and infrastructure required for the complexion of the tasks, according to the means available at the RCO.
- Certificate: All interns who successfully complete their internship will receive a certificate of completion
Competencies
Under the supervision of UN Coordination Associate, the Intern will undertake the following tasks:
- Compiling data for the research work of RCO
- Assisting in theme-based research about China
- Retrieving statistical data from internal and external sources
- Translations of documents
- Sorting out and updating files for RCO
- Assistance in disseminating information and documents
- Assistance in maintaining information database
- Assistance in reflecting editorial changes on documents
- Provide administrative support in related to the operational management
- To assist RCO in the overall development and maintenance of the UN Country website
- To organize and maintain a central database of the UNCT multimedia files, for use both internally and externally
- To translate content from English to Chinese and vice versa to ensure the both versions of the website (English and Chinese) are permanently up to date.
- To undertake any activity as requested by RCO
Required Skills and Experience
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Master student in Economy, Social Science, Computer Science and/or related courses;
- Strong oral and written communication ability, strong translation and interpretation (English and Chinese) skills;
- Proficient skills in Microsoft office applications;
- Strategic thinking and analytical skills;
- Tactful and responsible; Able to keep confidentiality
- Excellent interactive and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
Financial/Administrative Aspects
- The internship programme operates on a non-remunerative basis. The subsistence and travel costs connected with the internship programme must be borne by interns or by other institutions. Interns are responsible for arranging their own travel to Beijing and accommodations there.
- If work-related travel within the country is requested by UNDP during the internship period, per diem and travel costs shall be paid by UNDP.
Medical Coverage
UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs or hardships arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship. Interns must carry adequate medical and life insurance. Proof of medical coverage/visa must be provided before the internship commences.
