Organizational Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Office Space Assets Unit (OSAU) under Planning, Design and Construction Section (PDCS) of the Facilities Management Service (FMS) of the Department of Management. The duration of the internship is for two months, with possibility of extension, depending on the Unit's needs.
The role of FMS is to examine and report on a wide range of building use, facility management matters and provide work space accommodations to staff assigned to the United Nations in New York. FMS continues to renovate and refurbish the UN complex as well as alter leased properties when necessary. Access to relevant and updated floor plans and bar codes are essential to the overall reporting of the Unit.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours, 9-5/ M-F) under the supervision of a staff member in the Unit to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Chief, Office Space and Assets Unit (OSAU) and within delegated authority, the OSAU intern will assist in some of the following duties:
  • Assist in reviewing existing floor plans and staff list; survey floors and record changes
  • Assist in updating architectural changes to drawings with CAFM, Archibus, or AutoCAD
  • Assist in updating staff database of changes in staff locations/info with Access or Excel
  • Create a list in Excel of all necessary sign/barcode changes
  • Organize all edited floor plans/documents for every floor in binders or electronic folders
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Education
To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent,or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
  3. Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above and if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation.
  4. Preferably in the area of Architectural Engineering, or Facilities management degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an Architectural, Engineering, Facilities Management degree.
  5. Be computer literate in standard software applications, including Ms Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel), and AutoCAD.
  6. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  7. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, although work experience in an Architectural and/ or Engineering studio or Facilities Management is an advantage.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN languange is an asset.
  • Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
