Background
UN Women is the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. UN Women is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
All human development and human rights issues have gender dimensions. UN Women focuses on priority areas that are fundamental to women's equality, and that can unlock progress across the board. Five focus areas include violence against women, economic empowerment, leadership and participation, peace and security and national planning and budgeting.
The Communications Unit is one of the cross cutting Teams which leads and provides technical support to the Programme units in media outreach, disseminating strategic messages to various audiences, developing information and campaign strategies, developing knowledge products, and using the Internet and new media to raise awareness about the organization's role and activities.
Living Conditions: New Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region is a large and bustling metropolis of some 14 million people undergoing rapid changes. The capital city is an administrative, cultural and commercial center with modern amenities and well connected by air. It is a safe place with large expatriate community drawn from embassies, UN agencies, MNCs and foreign businesses. It has short moderate winter and long hot summer.
Conditions of Service: A twelve month contract; monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, INR 39,593; settling-in-grant (if applicable); life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return airfares (if applicable); resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
Duties and Responsibilities
Social Media Management
  • Provide support to manage and update the social media accounts of UN Women India MCO on a daily basis
  • Draft and post messages via HootSuite for Twitter and Facebook
  • Research additional content on women's empowerment and gender equality
  • Monitor the global social media accounts for content
  • Monitor the India MCO and Regional website for content
  • Support in planning tweet chats, and tweet ups during important advocacy periods
  • Plan, manage and execute social media campaigns on different programme areas
  • Live tweeting during speeches made by the UN Women Representative
  • Monitor data, trends and activity relating to the three accounts
Support Website Management
  • Help update new articles, publications and photos on the India MCO website www.unwomenindia.org through the content management system
  • Draft news articles and stories of interest for the website
  • Support the creation of digital content like videos and photo essays for website and Flickr
  • Prepare weekly e-mailers about new content to share with internal staff and partners
  • Support in the preparation of e-newsletters
Communication Material & Knowledge Management
  • Edit and proof-read communication products such as articles, e-newsletters, brochures, annual reports, postcards, calendars, website and social media
  • Oversee design and production of key corporate materials targeted at donors, media and partners
  • Support planning and implementation of UN Women's Knowledge Management strategy, including dissemination and e-documentation of knowledge products
  • Track and disseminate communications materials as and when required
  • Update corporate materials and UN Women's information kit
Media Outreach Support
  • Support all events across programme teams targeting the media
  • Support the Communications Analyst in planning and executing these events by issuing invites, following up with journalists, preparing media kits
  • Update media databases on a regular basis
Provide Operational Support
  • Support in the procurement of communication services and materials and management of vendors
  • Undertake logistics related to events and press conferences
  • Updating contact lists and mailing lists
  • Undertake other administrative tasks as required
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to
Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Results/Expected Output
The key results have an impact on the reputation and standing of UN Women in the country. Improved digital outreach and sharing, high quality information material and well-organized public events leading to enhanced UN Women's position as a strong development partner.
Competencies
  • Experience in web-based management systems such as PHP, html and content management systems. Well-versed in photography and good knowledge of photo management.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Graduate Degree from a recognized University in Communications, Media, Journalism, International Relations, or related fields
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in communications / public relations / publishing / editing. Excellent writing and editing skills, including writing for digital media Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) as well as other specialized software (Adobe Editor, photo and video editing software, Flickr, Word Press).
Language skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English. Knowledge of Hindi would be an asset.
